George W. Helmcamp "Buzzy"

George W. Helmcamp "Buzzy" passed away November 11, 2024 at the age of 88. He was born October 20, 1936 in Upton, Texas to Louis and Ruby Helmcamp.

George graduated Smithville High School with the class of 1955 and went to college on a football scholarship. He graduated from T.L.C (Texas Lutheran College) in 1960 with a BS in Education, Major in P.E., Minor in speech. His first job was at  Cibolo Schertz as a coach and teacher. During his last 3 years there, he became the head coach at the age of 26. From 1965-1968 he was head coach at Yorktown. He went on to be an Adult Probation Officer for 18 months with Bell County in Belton before he resumed his coaching profession at Wallis High School as assistant coach for 3 years. He then came to Smithville High School as the assistant coach, a teacher and bus driver for 8 years. Following that George managed Rawl Ranch for 14 years as a cattleman/rancher.

Beyond the accomplishments of his many careers, he enjoyed most spending time with people. He was faithful and active with his service to the church, community, and school system in Smithville. He liked to play dominoes, he loved hunting fishing and ranching, and most of all he enjoyed watching his kids, grandkids and great-grandkids participate in all their sports, performances, activities and accomplishments.

He was preceded by his parents and his sister, Patsy Steenken.

George is survived by his three sons, Todd Helmcamp, Trenton Helmcamp and his wife Jenny, T.J Helmcamp and his wife Maureen; grandchildren, Blake and Kelsey Wetsel, Beck and JoAnna Helmcamp, Luke Helmcamp, Kade and Katie Helmcamp, Bryce Helmcamp, Riley and Morgan Helmcamp, Cooper Helmcamp, Kennedy Helmcamp, Skylar Helmcamp, Harley Helmcamp; great-grandchildren, Brinna, Jaxon, Clara, Lizbeth, Warren, Heidie, Banks; his sister, Diane Hurst; nephews Mike Waneck and Fritz Steenken.

Visitation will be from 10:00am to 11:00am on Tuesday, November 19, 2024 at the Grace Lutheran Church in Smithville. The funeral service will begin at 11:00am on Tuesday, November 19, 2024 at the Grace Lutheran Church in Smithville with burial following at the Hancock Cemetery in Upton, Texas.
