Smithville

Lexie Gaye Gilchrist passed away on February 16, 2025, at her home in Bastrop, Texas. She was born on January 27, 1951, in Borger, Texas.

Lexie pursued higher education across multiple states, attending colleges in Texas, Colorado, Montana, and Oklahoma. She earned both a Bachelor of Science degree and a graduate degree in children’s education. Her passion for teaching led to a long and impactful career as a primary school teacher at Smithville Brown, where she was known not just as a teacher but as *the* teacher.

During her time in Montana, Lexie enjoyed working at Yellowstone National Park. She had a deep love for the outdoors and cherished spending time at the river in the Texas Hill Country. She also found joy in long country drives and adventurous rock crawling in Utah and Colorado with her Jeep.

Lexie had a lifelong love of books and was dedicated to encouraging children to read. She delighted in gifting books to young readers, fostering a love of learning that extended beyond the classroom.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Larry. She is survived by her husband, Edgar Nyc; stepdaughter Katy Lyytinen and her husband Kody Lyytinen; grandchildren Blayne and Brazos Lyytinen; as well as countless other family members and friends who were like family to her.

Lexie’s legacy lives on through the many lives she touched as an educator, mentor, and friend. May her memory bring comfort to those who knew and loved her.
